Abdullah Afzal, who stars in television comedy Citizen Khan, is hosting a charity event in Birmingham for humanitarian charity Penny Appeal, in aid of orphans in developing countries.

Abdullah Afzal – who plays Amjad in the BBC sitcom set in Birmingham – will be compering a live entertainment show at the Crown Banqueting Suite in Digbeth’s Upper Trinity Street this weekend.

Introducing uplifting Nasheeds (religious songs) from local duo Common Souls, beat-boxing from Ommar Sammur and break-dancing from Hakim Saber, the Big Muslim Variety Show is hoping to raise lots of cash, with proceeds being used to help care for orphans and provide an education to poor children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

With a three-course dinner, a hilarious comedy host and three thrilling acts the evening promises to be a night full of surprises.

The family-friendly showcase in Birmingham is the final celebration in a series of fundraising events for the month long Smile Relief fundraising campaign.

Throughout February, participating volunteers have made it their mission to raise a smile and raise funds.

A sponsored walk dubbed the ‘Smile Mile’, football tournaments and bake sales have also contributed funds to the charity’s orphan programme.

Aamer Naeem, CEO of Penny Appeal said, “Penny Appeal has been reminding people that, in Islam, smiling is Sunnah, a tradition or way of the Prophet Muhammad, and a form of charity.

“I hope people will join us to continue this tradition and bring a better future to some of the most vulnerable children in the world.”

The variety show is also touring Burnley and Glasgow this month.
