St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Birmingham are attended by thousands of people from all backgrounds (Photograph: Adam Yosef)
Birmingham is home to several high-profile annual community celebrations and parades, from Chinese New Year festivities and Birmingham Pride to the Birmingham Mela and Birmingham Carnival, but if there was ever one event that seems to bring everyone together – regardless of age, background or heritage – it would have to be St Patrick’s Day.
Among the sea of green and gold banners, balloons, flags and floats are an even wider array of colours, cultures and identities; as St Patrick’s Day joy attracts city residents and visitors from all walks of life. Unlike the somewhat largely shunned St George’s Day celebrations, a cross spectrum of Brummies identify with the city’s Irish community, in unity, solidarity and spirit.
